A pub (short for public house) is a drinking establishment licensed to serve alcoholic drinks for consumption on the premises. The term first appeared in the late 17th century, to differentiate private houses from those open to the public as alehouses, taverns and inns.

In today's world, more often than not the term “bar” is used for a more chic and cosmopolitan venue, attracting a mix of folks looking for a good time. Meanwhile, the term “pub” is often used to describe a more friendly and casual neighbourhood joint, where tradition and community rule the roost.

A pub is unlike a restaurant – you have to go up to the bar to place your order. The signal to show that you are ready to order is holding your money in your hand, so that it is visible to the person behind the bar. Once you have placed your order you will be given a table number that you place on your table.

References to ale houses begin in the 11th century. Some of these simple places offered basic food. By the 16th century a better class of establishment had evolved to cater for the new class of wealthier travelling merchants. Taverns sold superior food and wine and inns focussed on accommodation and food.
